The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Plateau State Chapter, has intensified its campaign to promote safe building practices through its “Catch Them Young” initiative, engaging secondary school students in Jos as part of activities marking the 2026 Builders’ Week.
The outreach programme took place at Christian Royal Ambassador College, Sabon Barki, and Government Secondary School Kyan‑Rikkos, where members of the institute sensitised students on the importance of the building profession and the need for safety in construction.
The exercise, according to the institute, was also inspired by the tragic collapse of Saint Academy School in 2024, which claimed lives and raised serious concerns about building safety and professional compliance in the construction sector.

Addressing the students, the Chairman of the NIOB Plateau Chapter, Bldr. Grace Pam Wang, explained that the outreach was designed to inspire young people to consider careers in building while also educating them about the dangers of poorly constructed structures. She stressed that professional builders play a key role in ensuring that buildings are safe for public use.
She added that early awareness among students would help nurture a new generation that understands the importance of safety and professionalism in the construction industry.
“The safety of our buildings begins with knowledge and responsibility. By educating young people today, we are laying the foundation for a future where structures are built to last and where human lives are always protected,” the chairman stated.
Wang further encouraged the students to remain focused on their education, particularly in science and technical subjects, noting that the future of the construction sector depends on well-trained and responsible professionals.

During the interactive sessions, members of the institute highlighted the responsibilities of builders in managing construction projects and ensuring that approved building designs are properly implemented according to safety standards.
Students were also encouraged to pursue science and technical subjects that would prepare them for careers in the building and construction industry, with the institute assuring them of mentorship opportunities within the profession.
The outreach programme forms part of NIOB’s long-term strategy to build awareness from an early stage and encourage future professionals who will contribute to a safer and more resilient built environment in Plateau State.
