Members of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Plateau State Chapter, took to the streets of Jos in a road walk aimed at creating public awareness on the importance of safe building practices as part of activities marking the 2026 Builders’ Week.
The awareness walk, which drew participation from professional builders and construction stakeholders, moved through major streets in the city, with participants carrying placards bearing messages that emphasised the need for strict adherence to building standards and the engagement of qualified professionals in construction projects.
The initiative, according to the institute, was also influenced by the tragic collapse of Saint Academy School in 2024, which raised renewed concerns about building safety and the need for stronger compliance with approved construction procedures.

Leading the exercise, the Chairman of the NIOB Plateau Chapter, Bldr. Grace Pam Wang, said the road walk was organised to sensitise residents, developers and property owners on the dangers of unregulated construction and the need to engage professional builders.
She noted that public awareness remains a key step toward preventing building failures and ensuring that structures are constructed according to professional standards and safety regulations.
“Our goal is to educate the public that safe buildings are not accidental; they are the result of proper planning, professional supervision and strict adherence to building regulations,” she said.
Wang further urged developers and property owners to always involve registered builders and other professionals in the construction process to avoid structural defects and potential disasters.

Participants used the opportunity to interact with residents and distribute awareness messages, encouraging the public to prioritise safety and professionalism in building projects.
The road walk formed part of the institute’s broader effort to promote a safer, more resilient built environment and to strengthen public understanding of the role professional builders play in national development.
