The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has trained 87 officers on the Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) to strengthen border security, enhance intelligence gathering and combat transnational crimes.

The training ended on Friday with a ceremony at the Technology Building, NIS Headquarters, Abuja.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stressed the importance of integrating immigration data with other government databases to improve national security, operational efficiency and citizen protection.

He urged the trained officers to deploy the system responsibly, describing their selection as a position of trust.

Tunji-Ojo also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting institutional reforms, personnel welfare and technological modernisation.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, charged the officers to use the system to detect security threats and combat cross-border crimes.

She emphasised accuracy, integrity and accountability in handling sensitive security information, noting that technology must complement professional judgment.

Nandap urged the officers to verify intelligence, observe due process and respond lawfully to security alerts.

Representing the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Director of Law Enforcement and Liaison at the Office of the National Security Adviser, AIG AN Thomas, commended the NIS for adopting technology-driven border management.

Thomas stressed the need for inter-agency collaboration and effective deployment of the system to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Earlier, ACI Patrick Odeh presented an overview of BCIMS, explaining that it integrates more than 15 million migration records from over 14 data sources.

The system supports real-time identity verification, intelligence-led border screening and the detection of fraudulent travel documents and security threats.

The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, comptrollers-general of sister security services and representatives of other security agencies.

The NIS said the initiative reaffirmed its commitment to modernising border control, strengthening intelligence-led operations and improving national security.
