The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has dismissed threats issued by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang’s defection, describing them as empty and baseless.

In a press statement dated January 3, 2026, the APC said the PDP reacted barely hours after the governor was officially presented with his APC membership card.

The party accused the PDP leadership of going “haywire” and seeking relevance by issuing what it termed unnecessary threats against the governor and the APC.

According to the APC, the PDP, during a press conference, accused Governor Mutfwang of betraying public trust, defecting without consultation, and alleged that the APC was complicit in accepting him.

The APC questioned the PDP’s claims, noting that the governor defected alongside key PDP figures, including serving and former lawmakers, party leaders, and all 17 local government council chairmen in the state.

It argued that the mass defection of prominent PDP stakeholders contradicts the claim that Governor Mutfwang acted alone or without consultation.

The APC also referenced a separate statement credited to former Governor and PDP leader, Senator Jonah Jang, which reportedly indicated that Governor Mutfwang consulted him before leaving the party.

According to the APC, Governor Mutfwang and leaders who joined him were said to control over 90 percent of PDP’s followership in Plateau State, making allegations of betrayal unfounded.

The party described the governor’s defection as calculated, popular, and well-considered, rather than an act driven by personal interest.

It further argued that remaining in the PDP would have limited the governor’s ability to meet the aspirations of Plateau citizens, insisting that the APC provides a more viable platform.

On accusations of complicity, the APC stated that Governor Mutfwang has a constitutional right to join any political party of his choice, adding that accepting him does not amount to wrongdoing.

The APC concluded that the PDP’s threats were ineffective and misplaced, urging the opposition party to focus on internal issues rather than scapegoating the APC for the governor’s defection.
