The Nigerian Army marked this year’s Eid-el-Kabir with a colourful event, highlighted by messages of unity, sacrifice, and hope from Major General Abdulsalami E. Abubakar, General Officer Commanding 3 Armored Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, and Deputy Commander T. Iyua. The celebration brought together military personnel, dignitaries, and community members in a show of solidarity and reflection held at the Operation Safe Haven headquarter in Jos, Plateau State.
In his opening remarks, Major General Abubakar extended “warmest greetings and goodwill” to the Muslim Umma in the Nigerian Army, recognizing Eid-el-Kabir as a time to commemorate “obedience, sacrifice, and faith,” inspired by Prophet Ibrahim. He highlighted the festival’s significance in the Islamic calendar, emphasizing its call for reflection on personal and collective accomplishments over the past year.
Reflecting on his tenure as Chief of Army Staff, which coincided with Eid Eid-el-Kabir, Major General Abubakar noted the Army’s progress in restoring peace and security across Nigeria. He lauded the “relative peace that we have been able to restore in most parts of our country” and commended the troops’ “unquantifiable sacrifice in blood and treasure” in the ongoing fight against various security challenges, including insurgency and banditry.
During the event, Major General Abubakar acknowledged the harsh economic realities affecting the celebration, noting their impact on the scale of festivities. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of supporting governmental reforms aimed at economic recovery, urging the troops to maintain their dedication despite these challenges. “The government deserves our common support and unflinching loyalty at this critical period,” he said, emphasizing a collective approach to overcoming economic difficulties.
Addressing the Army’s commitment to its personnel, Major General Abubakar assured them of his continuous support in providing the leadership required for effective training and combat readiness. He expressed deep appreciation for their bravery and resilience, saying, “I assure you of my commitment to providing always the leadership you require to train, live, and fight well.” He also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other senior officials for their strategic guidance and support.
Following Major General Abubakar’s speech, Deputy Commander T. Iyua delivered a vote of thanks, reinforcing the themes of unity and collective effort. He praised Major General Abubakar for sponsoring the celebration despite economic challenges, highlighting the latter’s belief in the collective responsibility of achieving lasting peace. “He believes it is a collective responsibility to achieve lasting peace on the plateau and beyond,” Iyua stated.
Deputy Commander Iyua Emphasized the importance of prioritizing peace over violence, stating that “He who pulls the trigger to declare war might not live to see the end of the war. Therefore, you must prioritize peace over violence and live in peace with one another.”
In his address, Senior Observer Excellency, Commander-in-Chief of L’Observante, praised the achievements of Operation Safe Haven in addressing security challenges across Plateau State. He noted significant accomplishments such as the “arrest of notorious criminals, rescue of kidnapped victims, and neutralization of threats,” which have contributed to the overall security of the region. His commendation underscored the operation’s effectiveness in maintaining peace and stability.
In a closing remark, Brig. Gen. G.G Shipi (Rtd), the special adviser on security to Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang highlighted the virtues of loyalty, obedience, and sacrifice as fundamental to both the Eid celebration and professional soldiery. He acknowledged the relative peace being enjoyed in Plateau State, attributing it to the concerted efforts of Operation Safe Haven and other security agencies. “I am proud of what Operation Safe Haven has been able to achieve since its establishment,” he said, applauding the troops’ dedication and success.
The event provided an opportunity for military and civilian to reflect on the Army’s efforts and achievements over the past year. Senior Observer Excellency urged continued focus on peace and security, encouraging the troops to persist in their efforts to secure the nation. His remarks highlighted the ongoing commitment to addressing security challenges and fostering an environment conducive to national prosperity.
Concluding the celebration, the leaders conveyed heartfelt Eid wishes to the troops and their families. Senior Observer Excellency expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation for their immeasurable sacrifices, saying, “Your bravery, commitment, and dedication to our nation’s security are the greatest gifts we can ask for.” His closing remarks emphasized the enduring message of peace, unity, and gratitude inherent in the Eid al-Adha celebration.
