Former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah David Jang, has called on politicians across the country to embrace politics of integrity, faith and selfless service, saying leadership should be driven by the desire to serve the people rather than the pursuit of power and personal gain.
Jang made the call on Saturday in Jos while speaking at the celebration of his 80th birthday, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers and other political leaders.
Reflecting on his years in public service, the former governor said political office is temporary and should never become the ultimate goal of those seeking leadership.
“As I look back over these eighty years, I have come to appreciate one enduring truth: positions come and go; power is temporary; fame fades; wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart,” he said.
Jang stressed that the values that truly define a leader are honesty, faith and commitment to humanity.
“What remains is character, faith, service to humanity and our relationship with God,” he added.
The elder statesman urged elected officials and aspiring leaders to focus on building a legacy of integrity and selfless service instead of being consumed by the quest for political power and material wealth.
He said leaders should always remember that public office is a privilege entrusted to them by the people and should be used to improve lives and promote the common good.
Jang also encouraged younger Nigerians to uphold moral values, embrace humility and remain committed to serving society with sincerity and compassion.
According to him, a nation can only make meaningful progress when its leaders place the interests of the people above personal or political ambitions.
He maintained that while political offices and earthly achievements are temporary, a life built on integrity, faith and service will leave a lasting impact on society.
