Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has approved the procurement of fertilizers for the 2026 farming season, introducing a subsidy that will allow farmers to purchase a 50kg bag for ₦20,000 instead of the current market price of between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000.

The governor said the intervention is aimed at reducing production costs, improving farmers’ profit margins and strengthening food security across the state.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, the state government has procured about 500 truckloads of fertilizer for distribution to farmers across the 17 local government areas.

Governor Mutfwang said agriculture remains a major pillar of his administration’s development agenda and a key driver of economic growth, employment and rural development.

He explained that the subsidy was introduced in response to the concerns of farmers over the rising cost of agricultural inputs.

“The fertilizer subsidy is a direct response to the concerns consistently raised by farmers over the rising cost of farming inputs and reflects the government’s determination to make agriculture more productive, profitable and sustainable,” the governor said.

Mutfwang noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s agricultural development objectives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Although the official flag-off of the 2026 Fertilizer Subsidy Programme is scheduled for July 10, the governor directed that the sale of the subsidized fertilizer should begin immediately to enable farmers benefit during the ongoing planting season.

He expressed confidence that the programme would reduce production costs, increase crop yields and improve farmers’ incomes.

“The initiative will significantly reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ profit margins, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s drive towards achieving food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development,” he stated.

The governor called on farmers across Plateau State to take advantage of the subsidy programme, assuring them of his administration’s continued commitment to policies and programmes that promote agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods and position Plateau as Nigeria’s leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness.
