The Plateau State Government has commenced the review and preparation of a new Greater Jos Master Plan, aimed at repositioning the state capital into a modern, well-structured city and a major investment destination.

The initiative is being driven by the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, as part of efforts to address rapid urban expansion, restore order in land use, and promote sustainable development across Jos and its environs.

This was disclosed during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, at his palace, by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Sylvanus Dongtoe.

He explained that the review of the existing master plan became necessary due to the expiration of previous planning frameworks, which could no longer effectively guide the city’s current development realities.

According to him, the state government has engaged key stakeholders and constituted a technical and advisory committee to drive the process. He also noted that a competent consortium has been selected to handle the development of the new master plan.

Arc. Dongtoe, who led officials of the ministry alongside consultants from Max Lock Nigeria & Partners Ltd., formally introduced the team responsible for the Greater Jos Master Plan 2025–2050, stressing the importance of collaboration with traditional institutions.

He emphasized that custodians of land remain critical stakeholders in the success of the project, adding that the government deliberately began consultations from traditional institutions to ensure inclusiveness and community ownership.

Representing the consortium, TPL Dr. Stephen O. Hirse explained that the Greater Jos Master Plan is designed as a long-term development framework that will guide the physical, social, and economic growth of Jos and its surrounding areas.

He said the plan would address land use planning, infrastructure development and financing, cultural urban growth, as well as security concerns and uncontrolled development that have previously hindered investment in the state capital. He added that the document, once completed, will be known as the Greater Jos Master Plan 2025–2050.

In his response, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, commended the government for the initiative and emphasized the importance of proper planning in achieving sustainable urban development. He assured the government of the full support of traditional institutions in ensuring the success of the project.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Keziah Ishaya Dung, mni, appreciated the Gbong Gwom Jos for the warm reception and expressed optimism that the collaboration would yield positive results.

She said with the support of traditional leaders and other stakeholders, the new master plan would promote orderly development, restore investor confidence, and reposition Jos as a thriving and well-planned urban centre in the years ahead.
