The Plateau State Government has clarified that all subsidised fertilizer for the 2026 farming season will now be sold at ₦20,000 per 50kg bag across the state, ending confusion over earlier reports of a higher selling price.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Samson Bugama, said the new price followed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s directive to further reduce the cost and increase farmers’ profit margins.
Speaking with journalists in Jos, Bugama explained that fertilizer was initially sold at ₦31,200 after a government committee recommended a price that reflected about a 40 per cent subsidy.
“When the fertilizers were procured, His Excellency put together a team to determine a pricing that would give farmers about 40% subsidy. After deliberations, the committee came up with ₦31,200,” he said.
The commissioner, however, disclosed that Governor Mutfwang ordered a further reduction after reviewing the situation and receiving feedback from farmers.
“When we did a review and got back to His Excellency, he magnanimously decided that the price of fertilizer should go down to ₦20,000 so that we can create margins for our people to be able to make profit,” Bugama stated.
He announced that the new price takes effect immediately, urging farmers who receive text notifications to purchase the product at ₦20,000 and not the previous price.
Bugama also said the government had begun arrangements to refund farmers who had already purchased the fertilizer at ₦31,200.
“By tomorrow we will swing into action to see the possibilities of refunding those people who were deceived. We will not cut them off from the magnanimity of His Excellency,” he said.
The commissioner warned that any distribution centre found selling above the approved price would face sanctions, adding that monitoring teams had been deployed across the state.
He urged farmers to report any outlet charging more than ₦20,000, assuring them that the government would not tolerate any attempt to undermine the subsidy programme.
Bugama said the price reduction is aimed at lowering production costs, boosting crop yields, increasing farmers’ earnings and strengthening food security across Plateau State.
