The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has disclosed that the Federal Government has identified the poorest of the poor through the ministry’s social register.

Doro made the revelation during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’ on Friday, where he explained the process used in compiling the register.

He stated that the government relies on communities to identify the poorest individuals, noting that not every poor person in Nigeria has been captured in the register.

According to him, the exercise initially focused on the poorest of the poor across the country.

The minister revealed that Nigeria currently has 17.9 million vulnerable households captured on the social register, translating to about 70 million Nigerians.

“The register is a product of community engagement and so we rely on the community base on the set of questions around socio-economic data to be able to identify the poorest of the poor.

“Communities will guide us based on the criteria that we have to be able to identify who is poor among them,” he said.

Doro emphasized that community participation remains central to ensuring transparency and accuracy in identifying beneficiaries for social intervention programmes.
