A bill seeking the creation of additional Local Government Areas in Plateau State has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill is sponsored by Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, a former Deputy Speaker of the House, and aims to strengthen grassroots governance in the state.
Leading the debate, Wase said the proposal was designed to address long-standing challenges of access, equity, and development in Plateau communities.
He explained that creating more LGAs would bring government closer to the people, especially those living in remote and underserved areas.
According to him, smaller local councils would improve service delivery in critical sectors such as primary healthcare, basic education, and rural infrastructure.
Wase also noted that the bill would promote fairness and inclusion among different communities and ethnic groups across the state.
Supporters of the bill argued that additional LGAs would enhance political participation and increase representation at both state and federal levels.
The proposal further highlighted potential economic benefits, including an increase in Plateau State’s share of federal allocations.
Proponents added that new LGAs would be better positioned to develop local resources and stimulate economic activities.
With the bill now through second reading, it will undergo further legislative scrutiny as it progresses through the remaining stages in the House.
