A deadly incident has occurred in the mining community of Zurak, Wase Local Government Area, where no fewer than 37 miners lost their lives after a suspected gas leak inside an underground mine.
The tragedy reportedly happened in the early hours of Tuesday when miners entered a deep tunnel and inhaled toxic gas believed to have been trapped within the shaft. Most of the victims were said to have died before rescue efforts could reach them.
Eyewitnesses said the gas spread suddenly underground, causing miners to collapse. Some workers were rescued alive and taken to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving medical care.
Community leaders confirmed the incident, describing it as a painful loss, as many of the victims were breadwinners who depended on mining for their livelihood.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the mining site to prevent further access and to allow authorities to carry out investigations.
The incident has renewed concerns over unsafe mining practices, especially in rural areas where mining activities are often unregulated.
Residents are calling on the government to enforce safety rules, monitor mining operations closely, and stop illegal mining to prevent future tragedies.
As mourning continues, the community is appealing for urgent action to protect miners and ensure safer working conditions across mining areas in Plateau State.
