Former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah David Jang, has dismissed claims that his absence at the wedding of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s daughter was due to a political rift between the two leaders.
In a press statement signed by his Media Consultant, Comrade Clinton Garuba, the former governor described an online publication suggesting that his absence could fuel speculation of a disagreement with Governor Mutfwang as misleading.
The statement explained that Senator Jang was unable to attend the wedding of Nanbam Mutfwang and Jeremiah Adeoye Ayodele because he had an earlier commitment in Makurdi, Benue State, where he attended events marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Benue State.
According to the statement, Jang and his wife, Mrs. Talatu Jonah Jang, honoured the invitation of the Benue State Governor because of their historical ties to the state, where Jang once served as governor and his wife as First Lady.
“When His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, presented his invitation for his daughter’s wedding, Senator Jang promptly informed the Governor that he would not be available, as he had already given his word to the Governor of Benue State,” the statement said.
It added that, as a mark of respect and courtesy, a member of Senator Jang’s family attended the wedding in Jos on behalf of the family.
“A member of Senator Jang’s family was sent to represent the family at the wedding ceremony in Jos,” the statement noted.
The former governor maintained that there was no political motive behind his absence.
“The Senator’s absence was purely a matter of prior engagement and not politics,” the statement emphasized.
Senator Jang therefore urged the public to disregard reports linking his absence to any misunderstanding with Governor Mutfwang, insisting that the claims were unfounded.
