The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the death of 37 persons following suspected gas exposure at a mining site in Kampani Zurak, Wase Local Government Area. Twenty-six other miners were rescued and are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, deployed the Area Commander, Divisional Police Officers, and tactical teams to the scene to oversee rescue and investigations. Police cordoned off the site while forensic teams collected rock, soil, and mineral samples for analysis.
“Upon reaching the scene, the area was cordoned, while other rescue operations are ongoing,” the police statement read.
Investigations indicated that miners were exposed to toxic gases including lead oxide, sulphur, and carbon monoxide in a poorly ventilated underground environment. The remains of the deceased have been released to their families for burial according to religious practices.
“As an additional measure to douse tension and prevent future occurrence of such ugly incidence, the Commissioner of Police has deployed the Assistant Commissioners of Police in Charge Operations (DOPS), and the State CID, who are currently at the scene to assess the situation,” the statement added.
The Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, also known as the Anti-Bomb Squad, was deployed to investigate the incident. Police confirmed that there was no evidence of an explosion or explosive device at the site.
CP Bassey Ewah extended condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Kampani Zurak Community. He warned residents against illegal mining activities and assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and properties in Plateau State.
“The corpses of the deceased victims have been released to their families for burial according to their religious practices,” the statement concluded, emphasizing ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of mining communities.
