The Plateau State Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning is set to undergo a major digital transformation aimed at modernising land administration and improving access to services in the state.
The Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom, disclosed this on Monday during the ministry’s 2027 budget defence at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat, Jos.
Gwom, who assumed office about a month ago following his redeployment from the Ministry of Environment, said his administration would prioritise the full digitisation of the ministry.
“Under my watch, the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning will be fully digitised. We must move away from the old manual system and embrace modern technology in the administration of land in Plateau State.”
He recalled that the ministry, established in 1930, was the first of its kind in Nigeria, expressing concern that despite its long history, many of its processes were still being handled manually.
“This ministry was established in 1930 and was the first of such ministries in Nigeria, but it is unfortunate that we are still operating manually in this era. We have to change that narrative.”
The commissioner said the Plateau State Geographical Information System, PLAGIS, would be a major focus of the reform, with plans already underway for its comprehensive overhaul.
“We are already working towards a total overhaul of PLAGIS in line with modern best practices. There are several innovations we intend to introduce to improve land administration and make the system more efficient.”
He explained that the planned reforms would form part of broader efforts to reposition the ministry and improve the quality and efficiency of services provided to residents, investors and other stakeholders.
Gwom commended members of the budget defence committee for their work, while expressing appreciation to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for providing an enabling environment for the ministry to pursue its objectives.
“I appreciate the Governor for the enabling environment he has provided for us to work. With the support we are receiving, we are determined to reposition the ministry and achieve the objectives we have set.”
The commissioner also highlighted some of the achievements of the Mutfwang administration over the past three years, urging Plateau residents to continue to support the governor as the 2027 general elections approach.
