Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has announced the introduction of 200 locally manufactured hand tillers as part of efforts to modernize agriculture and boost food production in Plateau State.
The governor made the disclosure while delivering the keynote address at the Democracy Day Town Hall Meeting and #2027Conversation held in Jos, where he outlined his administration’s achievements and plans for agricultural transformation.
According to Mutfwang, the hand tillers, developed by a Plateau-based innovator, are currently undergoing pilot testing during the ongoing farming season to determine their effectiveness and suitability for wider deployment.
“We are test-running about 200 hand tillers this farming season. If successful, we will scale up production to 2,000 units. Our goal is to eliminate the drudgery of manual farming and make agriculture attractive to young people,” the governor said.
He explained that the initiative forms part of the state’s broader strategy to transition from subsistence farming to mechanized and commercial agriculture, while creating jobs and improving farmers’ productivity.
Mutfwang further revealed that the government has procured about 500 trucks of fertilizer for distribution to farmers and is investing in irrigation and other agricultural infrastructure to enhance food production across the state.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting innovation in agriculture and positioning Plateau as a leading hub for food production and agribusiness in Nigeria.
