The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has shut down two substandard abattoirs in Jos North Local Government Area as part of efforts to protect public health and ensure food safety.
The affected facilities, Filin-Ball and Gadan Ganda abattoirs, were closed following a routine inspection carried out by officials of the Agency.

Director-General of PEPSA, Mr. Samuel Nathaniel Dapiya, ordered the immediate suspension of operations at the abattoirs after they were found to be operating in unhealthy and unsafe conditions.
According to the Agency, the inspection revealed that the facilities lacked basic infrastructure required for hygienic meat processing, including access to clean water, proper drainage systems, and effective waste disposal mechanisms.
PEPSA also observed that poor waste management practices at the abattoirs were contributing to environmental pollution and posing risks to nearby communities.
Of serious concern was the discovery that contaminated water was being used to wash slaughtered animals, a practice that exposes consumers to potential health hazards.
The Agency stressed that the operation of illegal and substandard abattoirs would not be tolerated, noting that meat processed under such conditions threatens public health and undermines environmental safety.
Following the closure, PEPSA disclosed plans to engage the leadership of the affected abattoirs to discuss corrective measures.
These measures may include relocating their operations to the Jos Main Abattoir, where standard facilities, proper sanitation, and regulatory oversight are available.
PEPSA also urged residents to ensure that meat purchased for consumption is sourced only from approved and hygienic abattoirs.
The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing sanitation standards and working with stakeholders to promote a cleaner, safer, and healthier Plateau State.
PEPSA called on the public to support its efforts by reporting unhygienic practices that pose risks to public health and the environment.
