The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has strongly condemned the decision of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a “betrayal of public mandate.”
The party said it received Governor Mutfwang’s resignation letter on Tuesday, January 2, 2026, at the PDP state secretariat through the Chairman of PDP, Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Choji Felix Dalyop, PhD, the PDP accused the governor of abandoning the party that brought him to power on the platform of trust and popular support.
According to the party, Governor Mutfwang’s action is “a slap in the face to the people of Plateau State” who stood by him despite challenges and reposed confidence in his leadership.
The PDP insisted that it was never consulted by the governor prior to his resignation, contrary to claims circulating in some quarters, and described the defection as unconstitutional and unjustifiable.
The party further argued that the governor’s defection amounts to political opportunism and a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the electorate for personal ambition.
The PDP urged the people of Plateau State to hold Governor Mutfwang accountable for his decision and reject any attempt by him to seek re-election under a new political platform.
It also warned the Plateau State chapter of the APC against accepting the governor, saying such an action would make the party complicit in what it termed a betrayal of the people’s trust.
The party described the defection as inconsistent with democratic values such as trust, integrity, and accountability, which it said remain core principles of the PDP.
While condemning the governor’s action, the PDP called on its members and supporters across the state to remain calm, resolute, and steadfast.
The statement reaffirmed that the PDP remains united, strong, and focused on participating in all forthcoming elections in Plateau State.
The party concluded by assuring the public of its continued commitment to good governance and democratic dividends, declaring that it would not be deterred by what it described as temporary setbacks caused by individuals lacking party loyalty and discipline.
