The National Assembly has begun consideration of the 2026 budget proposal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of preparations for future electoral activities.

The submission was presented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Simon Bako Lalong, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Senator Lalong explained that the presentation followed standard legislative practice, after the budget had been received and scrutinised by the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters.

He noted that the review by his committee was aimed at ensuring that INEC’s financial proposals align with its constitutional responsibilities and operational needs.

According to him, adequate funding remains critical for the effective conduct of elections and the successful implementation of ongoing electoral reforms.

The lawmaker added that the budget consideration also complements the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

He stressed that proper budgetary support would enhance transparency, efficiency, and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The session before the Appropriations Committee was presided over by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Tahir Monguno.

Senator Monguno received the submission on behalf of the committee for further examination ahead of the final passage of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

The appearance underscores the National Assembly’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through timely legislative oversight and responsible financial planning.
