Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The gesture followed consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and covers inmates serving various sentences across custodial facilities in Plateau State, according to a statement by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

The four inmates whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi.

Mutfwang said the exercise reflected the importance of hope, justice and renewed opportunities as Nigerians commemorate the country’s independence.

“As we celebrate our independence, we must remain hopeful and committed to building a peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.”

He urged citizens to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of its founding fathers and acknowledge both the challenges confronting the nation and the progress recorded over the years.

The governor said his administration remained committed to creating a Plateau State where citizens could pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.

“We must continue to believe in the strength of our nation and work collectively to build a country where every citizen has a sense of belonging and the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations.”

Mutfwang also commended the people of Plateau State for their resilience, patience, patriotism and contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to use the Independence Anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to peace, unity and national development, while wishing citizens at home and in the Diaspora a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary.
