The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has rejected allegations by the Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) over the alleged poisoning and shooting of cattle in parts of Plateau State, describing the claims as misleading and capable of escalating tension.
In a statement issued by Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary on January 12, 2026, BYM said the narrative being pushed by MACBAN does not align with credible intelligence reports available to the public and security agencies, particularly concerning events in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas.
The association disclosed that intelligence reports had earlier warned of meetings allegedly held by armed Fulani militant elements around Gashish District in Barkin Ladi LGA, where plans were reportedly made to attack Kwi community and neighbouring areas such as Wereng and parts of Heipang District.
BYM expressed concern that shortly after these intelligence alerts, MACBAN released statements portraying Fulani herders as victims, a pattern the group said has often preceded violent attacks on vulnerable communities.
It further noted that similar intelligence warnings pointed to planned ambushes along the Sho–Jol axis, posing serious threats to commuters. The group said this warning was tragically confirmed with the killing of a three-year-old pupil, Purity Gideon Samuel, along the Sho–Jol Road near the Sho forest on January 10, 2026.
According to BYM, roads linking Sho and Jol villages remain largely under the control of armed militants, adding that another attack occurred late on January 11, 2026, when suspected Fulani attackers invaded Nukur village in Rahoss community of Riyom LGA, killing two persons.
The youth body recalled several past incidents where MACBAN’s public claims allegedly contradicted eyewitness accounts following attacks, noting that such narratives have deepened mistrust and heightened tensions in affected communities.
While supporting thorough and impartial investigations into all alleged crimes, including those involving livestock, BYM called on security agencies to urgently investigate both MACBAN’s allegations and the recurring attacks on Berom communities, act decisively on available intelligence, and provide adequate protection to communities under threat.
