Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has defended his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a strategic decision taken in the overall interest of Plateau State.
The governor made this known while responding to growing criticism from political opponents who accused him of abandoning the PDP for personal political survival. Mutfwang insisted that his decision was neither a betrayal nor driven by self-interest but aimed at securing greater development opportunities for the state.
Since officially declaring for the APC on January 27, the governor has faced backlash from critics. However, he maintained that Plateau people should now expect improved collaboration, enhanced support, and accelerated development under the ruling party.
According to him, his administration had already enjoyed significant cooperation from the federal government, noting that aligning with the APC would further strengthen Plateau State’s position as a key state in the North Central region. He described Plateau as the “jewel of the crown” in the zone, with vast political and economic potential that could be better harnessed under the ruling party.
Governor Mutfwang also pointed to unresolved internal crises within the PDP, stating that the party showed no clear signs of resolving its challenges. He revealed that although he initially had no intention of leaving the PDP, persistent internal turmoil convinced him that the party would not serve as a viable platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He explained that as the 2027 elections approach, the need for a stable and credible political platform became critical. According to him, the available options were either to seek a new political party or accept the invitation to join the APC, which he described as the most practical choice.
The governor further assured Plateau residents that his alignment with the APC would enhance ongoing efforts in key sectors such as education, security, agriculture, and social development. He stressed that progress already achieved by his administration would be strengthened through closer ties with the federal government.
Mutfwang concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving the people of Plateau State, emphasizing that his political decision was made with the long-term development, stability, and unity of the state in mind.
