The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, has said that only the party has the power to decide who emerges as its vice presidential candidate in 2027.
He made this known during an interview on Sunday Politics on Trust TV, monitored by Clusterchannel, while reacting to speculations surrounding the position of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Prof. Nentawe explained that matters of candidature are strictly within the authority of the party and not individuals.
“Candidates belong to the political party and not individuals,” he said.
He added that even elected leaders only contest elections through their party platform.
“Even the President, when he becomes a candidate, he’s a candidate of the party,” he stated.
The APC chairman described public comments by individuals on the vice presidential ticket as misleading and unofficial.
“So every other person that has made a statement, they’re just rumour mills,” he said.
He noted that such comments are capable of creating unnecessary tension within the party.
Prof. Nentawe said the APC has already issued a clear directive to its members on the matter.
“We said nobody in APC… should make any statement on that issue,” he said.
He stressed that the party has not taken any official position on the 2027 vice presidency and remains focused on internal unity.
According to him, the APC leadership is concentrating on building a strong and united party ahead of future elections.
He also urged party members and Nigerians to ignore distractions and focus on unity, development, and national progress.
