The second day of the Plateau State Interdenominational Christmas Carols and Praise Festival was marked with a moving keynote address by the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
The event, held at the 10 Commandments Altar in Du, Jos South LGA, united people from different Christian denominations to celebrate Christmas in an atmosphere of peace and praise.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo stressed the importance of love, peace, and unity as guiding principles for life. He emphasized that love fosters harmony and prevents conflict, making it the cornerstone of human relationships and the essence of the Christmas message. He encouraged people to embrace love to bridge differences and build stronger communities.
Addressing the root causes of conflict, Chief Obasanjo linked them to a lack of love and understanding. He highlighted how love enables people to appreciate diversity while focusing on shared values and goals. He emphasized that God’s gift of diversity is meant for identity, but our common nature unites us.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with peace, Chief Obasanjo called for love as the foundation of peace and security, not just in Plateau State but across the country. He reminded the audience of the biblical message from John 3:16, reinforcing the idea that God’s love, manifested through Christ, should inspire human actions toward peace.
Obasanjo commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his efforts in promoting peace through initiatives like the Christmas Carol Festival. He praised such events for fostering unity and strengthening the bonds of community and faith.
During the Carol, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang reaffirmed the festival’s role in uniting people under God’s purpose. He encouraged the people of Plateau State to focus on the “bigger picture” of peace and progress, rather than being divided by past challenges. He expressed hope that by prioritizing unity, the state would achieve its full potential.
In his speech, Governor Mutfwang honored national leaders like General Yakubu Gowon and Chief Obasanjo for their contributions to peace. He committed to continuing initiatives that promote unity and peace in Plateau State.
In his exhortations, Reverend Polycap Lubo, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Plateau State, Draws inspiration from the book of Isaiah 7:14 which centered on unity and divine purpose. He highlighted the fulfillment of biblical prophecies through Christ’s birth and called on Christians to live as “lights of the world,” embodying their faith in ways that positively influence others. He further emphasized the importance of singing praises as expressions of joy and worship.
The Christmas Carol and Praise Festival featured gospel artists and groups, including Panam Percy Paul, Solomon Lange, Plateau Unity Choir, and Trumpeters. These performances captivated the audience with their powerful performances, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the state and uniting the congregation in celebration of Christ’s birth.
