The Voice of Plateau Youths (VOPY) has issued a strong call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the immediate appointment of a Minister for Plateau State. The youth group expressed deep concern over the continued lack of representation for Plateau State in the federal executive council, a situation they describe as “a glaring oversight” that contradicts the principles of equity and inclusivity in Nigeria’s democracy.

The group highlighted that Plateau State, known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse population, has been without a minister since Senator Simon Bako Lalong, the former Minister of Labour and Employment, took office in the Senate as a representative of Southern Plateau. VOPY emphasized that this absence deprives the state of a crucial voice in national decision-making.

In the statement signed by the group’s convener, Enoch John Vilret, VOPY reminded President Tinubu of the state’s significant contribution during the 2023 elections, noting, “Despite the religious acrimony in the 2023 elections, Plateau state delivered a whooping 307,195 votes to make you come second in the state and, in turn, win the popular votes to become President. We deserve a lot better.”

VOPY’s appeal is centered on the need for the federal government to address the unique needs and aspirations of Plateau State’s citizens. The group believes that appointing a dedicated and qualified minister would not only restore faith in the government but also strengthen the relationship between Plateau State and the federal government.

“This is a matter of urgent importance that cannot be ignored,” the statement continued. “We implore Your Excellency to take swift action to appoint a Minister for Plateau State and demonstrate your commitment to good governance and the welfare of all Nigerians, devoid of state, region, ethnicity, religion, or class.”

The Voice of Plateau Youths concluded their statement by thanking President Tinubu for his attention to what they consider a pressing issue and called for immediate action to rectify the situation.
