Tragic events occurred when gunmen launched a devastating attack on Adu village in Kwal District of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, which left nine people dead.

When speaking with reporters on Monday in Jos, Nuhu Bitrus, the spokesman for the Miango Youths Development Association, acknowledged the terrible incident.

He claims that about nine o’clock on Sunday night, the shooters broke into the settlement.

The incident forced the town to suspend its planned events for Nigeria’s 63rd independence day celebration, Bitrus said, expressing his grief over the lives lost.

The event, which was originally scheduled for Monday, was changed to become a day of sadness and prayer for the safety of its residents instead.

He bemoaned, “We are not happy that we are currently mourning the lives of nine of our people in the village of Adu who were killed in an attack last night (Sunday). It is terrible that we are assembling in Kwal to bury our deceased while others are celebrating Nigeria’s 63rd year of independence.

“As a community, we had intended to participate in a number of events to commemorate Nigeria’s 63rd year of independence, but we are no longer doing that. The occasion has been transformed into a day of prayer for the security of our neighbourhoods.

Bitrus pleaded on authorities at all levels to act swiftly to stop more assaults on Bassa communities.

Alabo Alfred, a spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
