Senator Simon Bako Lalong has called on stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral process to work collectively to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
Lalong, who represents Plateau South Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, made the call at a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders Meeting convened by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The meeting was part of preparations for the 2027 General Elections and the presentation of the Commission’s revised schedule of activities.
Lalong said the task of ensuring credible elections does not rest with INEC alone, but requires the cooperation of all stakeholders.
“The responsibility of ensuring credible elections does not rest solely with INEC, but requires the active participation and cooperation of political parties, security agencies, election observers, electoral officials, the media, citizens and the international community.”
He said every stakeholder has a defined role to play in strengthening the electoral process and supporting INEC to discharge its constitutional mandate.
The former Plateau State governor particularly highlighted the role of the media in providing citizens with accurate information ahead of the elections.
“The media must continue to report developments objectively, highlight challenges, document improvements and provide citizens with accurate information that will enable them to make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in the democratic process.”
Lalong also urged Nigerians to have confidence in the electoral system and participate actively in elections, saying the credibility of democracy depends on citizens’ belief that their votes will count.
He called for greater synergy among stakeholders and warned against actions capable of undermining the electoral process for personal or narrow political interests.
“The electoral process must not be undermined by individuals or groups pursuing personal or narrow political ambitions.”
Lalong assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would continue to work with INEC and other relevant institutions to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for elections.
He commended INEC for engaging stakeholders early, saying sustained consultations would help identify challenges and address them before election day.
Also speaking, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, outlined the Commission’s preparations for the 2027 elections and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent and credible polls.
