As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Alfred Dapal Damiyal, ADD, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Governorship candidate for Plateau State has urged citizens to protect the freedom of their conscience and make informed choices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Damiyal, in his Independence Day message, said the significance of freedom extends beyond national independence, stressing that citizens also have a responsibility to make choices that would shape the country’s collective future.

He said, “As we commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day, we are reminded that the essence of freedom lies not only in the independence of a nation, but also in the freedom and responsibility of its citizens to make choices that shape their collective future.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Damiyal urged Nigerians to carefully examine the records and ideas of those seeking their support before making their decisions.

He said, “Let us listen carefully, examine the records and ideas before us, and make our decisions freely, thoughtfully and without fear or undue influence.”

The Plateau politician also stressed the importance of citizens participating actively in the democratic process, saying democracy is strengthened when people are able to question leaders and hold them accountable.

“Our democracy is strengthened when citizens are free to ask questions, hold leaders accountable and choose according to their convictions,” he said.

Damiyal urged Nigerians not to allow political differences to undermine their shared responsibility to the country and future generations.

“Whatever our political differences, we must never lose sight of our shared responsibility to Nigeria and to the generations that will inherit the choices we make today,” he stated.

He called for a renewed commitment to freedom, justice, dignity and responsible citizenship as the country continues its democratic journey.

“May this Independence Day renew our faith in the Nigerian spirit and inspire us to build a society founded on freedom, justice, dignity and responsible citizenship,” Damiyal said.

He wished Nigerians a happy Independence Day and reaffirmed his vision of a “Safe, United & Prosperous Plateau.”
