The African Union, AU, has appointed Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard M. Doro, to the Governing Board of the African Humanitarian Agency, AFHA, as the representative of West Africa.
The appointment will see the Plateau-born minister serve a three-year, non-renewable term alongside Côte d’Ivoire’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Léon Kacou Adom, providing strategic oversight for the AU’s humanitarian coordination, policy direction and emergency response across the continent.
The development is being viewed as a recognition of Nigeria’s growing role in humanitarian affairs, social protection and poverty reduction within Africa.
Reacting to the appointment, Dr. Doro described it as “both a national honour and a continental responsibility,” pledging to contribute to strengthening humanitarian coordination and advancing the African Union’s efforts to address humanitarian challenges across member states.
