Latep Dabang, the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has resigned from his position.

In a resignation letter dated June 30, 2025, Dabang thanked Governor Mutfwang for the opportunity to serve and praised his leadership in steering the state’s political affairs.

Dabang, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), previously served as the Director-General of the Plateau State Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council during the 2023 elections.

Meanwhile, strong indications suggest that the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Gabriel Dewan, may also be preparing to step down. Dewan, the sole Young Progressives Party (YPP) member in the 24-member Assembly, represents Pankshin North Constituency.

Sources within the legislature, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that discussions are ongoing to facilitate a “soft landing” for the Speaker, with resignation being a probable outcome.

Amid rising political tensions, Governor Mutfwang is currently holding a closed-door meeting with Speaker Dewan and other lawmakers at the Old Government House in Jos. The lawmakers arrived at about 11:40 a.m. and were quickly ushered into the Governor’s residence by security personnel.

While the agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, it is believed to be connected to the recent crisis in the State Assembly. Dewan became Speaker in 2024 following a Court of Appeal ruling that ousted 16 PDP lawmakers, replacing them with 15 All Progressives Congress (APC) members and one from the Labour Party.

Political analysts speculate that the Governor’s meeting may be an effort to unify the Assembly and prevent further disputes, potentially paving the way for a new Speaker.

Already, at least three lawmakers have reportedly expressed interest in the Speakership should the position become vacant.
