The Students’ Union Government (SUG) House of Parliament at the University of Jos has suspended its President following, Jane Kaneng Pwajok allegations of financial misconduct. The decision was reached during a plenary session held on June 27, 2025, after a thorough investigation by the Parliamentary Misconduct Investigation Committee.
According to the official statement, the President was found guilty of withdrawing Union funds without the consent of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer. This act violated the financial regulations governing the Students’ Union Government.
“Following the submission of a detailed report by the Parliamentary Misconduct Investigation Committee, constituted to investigate allegations of misconduct against the SUG President, the House, after thorough deliberation, found the President guilty of the following offenses.”
Among the offenses listed was the President’s failure to remit Union funds for over a month, withholding them without proper disclosure. This action disrupted Union activities and raised concerns about transparency.
“Inappropriate withdrawal of Union funds without the consent and official endorsement of the Unions Financial Secretary and Treasurer, contrary to the financial regulations governing the Students’ Union Government.”
Additional complaints were brought forward by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Secretary General, accusing the President of abuse of office and disregard for constitutional procedures. These allegations further strengthened the case for suspension.
The motion for suspension was moved and seconded during the plenary, with 32 out of 42 Senators voting in favor. The President was subsequently suspended for six weeks, effective immediately.
“Consequently, the SUG President has been suspended from office for a period of six (6) weeks, effective immediately, all SUG Properties and documents in the President’s position should be submitted to the secretary general.”
During the suspension period, the Vice President will assume leadership in an acting capacity to ensure the smooth running of Union activities. The Parliament emphasized its commitment to accountability and student welfare.
“The Parliament wishes to reassure the entire students’ community that the Students’ Union Government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the protection of students’ interests at all times.”
Students were urged to remain calm and law-abiding while supporting the Union’s efforts to address the situation. The suspension has sparked mixed reactions among the student body, with some calling for stricter oversight of Union finances.
The suspension letter was signed by the Speaker, Clerk, and other parliamentary officials. All further correspondence regarding the matter is to be directed through the Clerk’s office.
