Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, has emphasized the critical need to ensure access to justice for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.
Speaking at a groundbreaking sensitization workshop, he launched a nationwide campaign to combat discrimination and uphold the rights of over 35.5 million PWDs across the country.
Supported by institutions like the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), the World Bank, the European Union, and the Federal Ministry of Justice, the commission unveiled Operational Guidelines for the Provision of Legal Protection and Redress. These guidelines are designed to empower PWDs to seek justice when their rights are violated.
“The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated,” Gufwan noted, highlighting the staggering number of Nigerians living with disabilities and the pressing need for practical solutions.
“Our goal is to create a more inclusive and equitable society where PWDs are respected, protected, and have equal access to justice,” Gufwan stated.
This initiative marks a turning point in Nigeria’s disability rights movement, with Chief Gufwan reiterating his commitment to ensuring justice and equality for PWDs.
