Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, has renewed his call for the expansion of the Yakubu Gowon Airport runway in Heipang, Jos. The former Governor of Plateau State emphasized the need for the upgrade to facilitate international cargo operations and boost economic activities, especially in agriculture.

Lalong, a member of the Senate Committee on Aviation, made this plea to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a Senate session to defend the 2025 budget submissions of various ministries and agencies.

The senator expressed disappointment that despite the airport’s designation as an international cargo airport focused on agricultural exports, progress has been stalled due to the runway’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft. He pointed out that expanding the runway would allow the export of Plateau’s exotic and fresh agricultural products, enhancing local and international trade.

Lalong reminded Minister Keyamo of their shared efforts during the presidential campaign for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to ensure the project’s completion as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He stressed that upgrading the airport would bring significant economic advantages to the region.

In addition to cargo exports, Lalong highlighted that the lack of an expanded runway hindered efforts to airlift pilgrims directly from Heipang to the Holy Land during the 2022 National Christian Pilgrimage.

The senator further called on the Minister of Aviation and related agencies to prioritize the safety and comfort of air travelers while improving infrastructure in the aviation sector.
