The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters and INEC, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, has promised to partner with key stakeholders to improve Nigeria’s electoral processes.
This assurance came when the Executive Director of the Policy and Legislative Advocacy Centre (PLAC), Mr. Clement Nwankwo, led a delegation to meet with Senator Lalong at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The meeting followed Lalong’s recent appointment as the new chairman of the committee after a leadership reshuffle by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Mr. Nwankwo congratulated Senator Lalong on his new role and said PLAC is ready to work closely with him to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system. He expressed confidence in Lalong’s capacity and experience to lead the committee effectively.
“PLAC believes Senator Lalong has the needed experience to ensure better electoral outcomes that will meet citizens’ expectations,” he stated, while presenting the senator with some documents to aid future collaboration.
In his response, Senator Lalong thanked PLAC for the visit and emphasized his commitment to upholding the constitution and delivering on the committee’s mandate.
“As a former Speaker, Governor, Minister, and now Senator, I am ready to use my experience to lead the committee in delivering the best results for Nigerians,” he said.
He also encouraged PLAC and other civil society organisations to continue working with the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary to strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
