The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, alongside three other top military officers, following a four-hour screening session on Tuesday.

Others confirmed include Major-General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.

Their confirmation comes after President Bola Tinubu forwarded their names to the Senate for approval, seeking to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

During the screening, the nominees were grilled on issues relating to national defence, internal security, and inter-agency coordination to address the country’s security challenges.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing their confirmation, expressed confidence in their ability to deliver effective leadership in the Armed Forces.

He urged the new Service Chiefs to work together in protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring peace across the country.

The Senate Committee on Defence, which conducted the screening, described the officers as competent and experienced, having served in various strategic military roles.

The newly confirmed Service Chiefs will now be decorated with their new ranks by President Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
