Plateau United Football Club has called for calm and a thorough investigation into several incidents that occurred during their NPFL Matchday 13 fixture against Ikorodu City FC in Lagos. The club raised the concerns in an official statement issued to the NPFL, NFF, security agencies, and the general public.
According to the statement, Plateau United faced challenges accessing a proper training pitch for their mandatory pre-match session. Team officials were informed that only half of the pitch would be available, forcing the club to extend training late into the evening without adequate lighting. The club said efforts to get clarification from league authorities before the match yielded no result.
During halftime of the match, with the score still goalless, the club reported disturbances near the referees’ dressing area. Members of the technical crew, including Team Manager Myeopolai Bulus Ghai and Goalkeeper Coach Ayo Segun, allegedly observed individuals suspected to be under the influence of alcohol causing trouble around the restricted zone.
The club further disclosed that Coach Segun was physically assaulted while attempting to report the situation and ensure staff safety. Plateau United said the incident raised major concerns about security and the protection of football personnel during league matches.
Following this, the Sporting Director, Barr. Gideon Izang, and the Chief Security Officer, Itumu, reportedly tried to reach the Match Commissioner to file an official report. However, their access was allegedly obstructed, and more individuals became involved, worsening the situation.
Plateau United confirmed that parts of the incident were captured on video and will be submitted to relevant authorities as part of a formal complaint. The club stressed its commitment to sportsmanship, professionalism, and the peaceful conduct of football activities.
The statement requested an impartial investigation by the NPFL, NFF, and security agencies to uncover the facts, address any breaches, and prevent similar occurrences in the future. The club added that such steps would help strengthen confidence in the governance of Nigerian football.
