The Plateau State Government has reiterated its dedication to climate resilience and effective environmental governance, following a high-level Plateau State Climate Assembly Steering Committee Meeting chaired by Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom, Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development.
Held last week in Jos, the meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss key climate governance issues and chart a path for sustainable development across the State.

Hon. Gwom highlighted that the discussions focused on critical areas including the current status of the Plateau State Climate Framework Document, preparations for the upcoming COP 30, and the review of the State Climate Assembly Operational Plan.
The committee also examined the Sub-National Climate Governance Ranking, identifying strategies to strengthen Plateau State’s performance and align with national and global climate objectives.
According to the commissioner, the meeting reinforced the importance of coordinated action among government agencies, development partners, and civil society to ensure practical and measurable climate outcomes.
Hon. Gwom emphasized that the State’s climate initiatives are designed to balance environmental protection with socio-economic development, ensuring that communities benefit directly from sustainability efforts.
Stakeholders at the meeting also recognized the value of proactive policy formulation and monitoring, which will enable Plateau State to respond effectively to climate challenges while positioning the State as a model for governance reform.
Concluding the meeting, Hon. Gwom reaffirmed the government’s commitment under Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s leadership to climate action, innovation, and building a resilient Plateau that prioritizes both environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.
