Plateau State joined the nation on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with a solemn ceremony in Jos. The event celebrated the courage and sacrifice of Nigerian military personnel who served the nation.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed every year on January 15, honours officers and soldiers who gave their lives defending Nigeria’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity. It also remembers those wounded or permanently injured while serving the country.
The ceremony took place at the J.D. Gowon Secretariat, Jos, and featured interdenominational prayers for fallen heroes and for peace across the nation.

Wreaths were laid in memory of the departed soldiers, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, the sounding of the Last Post, and a minute of silence to honour their sacrifice.
The programme later moved to the Headquarters of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, where a luncheon was held in the Rhino Officers Mess.
At the luncheon, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Ngo Josephine Piyo, described the occasion as a solemn tribute to the courage and resilience of Nigeria’s armed forces.
Governor Mutfwang said Plateau State was proud of its history of military service. He acknowledged the armed forces’ role in keeping peace and security across the country.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s support for the military through collaboration, provision of resources, and strengthening civil-military relations.

Major General Oyinlola paid tribute to veterans and families of fallen soldiers. He assured them that the sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten.
He also praised the discipline, courage, and dedication of the officers and soldiers under his command, especially in the face of current security challenges.

Colonel Adams Donzhi (rtd.), Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Plateau State, thanked the state government for its ongoing support to the Legion and veterans. He called for continued care for widows, orphans, and families of fallen heroes.
The ceremony ended with prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria. Attendees also renewed calls for collective support for the nation’s armed forces and veterans.
