The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that local government elections will hold across the 17 councils of the state on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, made this known during a press briefing in Jos where he also unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities leading to the polls.
He explained that the PLASIEC Law 2024 provides that the tenure of elected local government officials is two years and that election notices must be issued 360 days before voting day.

According to him, the timetable begins with the publication of the notice of election and release of election timetable on September 4, 2025. Party primaries are expected to hold between January 12 and 30, 2026, while the collection and submission of nomination forms will take place from February 2 to March 2, 2026.
The publication of candidates’ particulars is slated for March 7, 2026, with screening and verification exercises to follow shortly after. The final list of nominated candidates will be released on March 30, 2026, paving the way for official campaigns by political parties.
“The next activity is the election day which is between 8 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday 1 September 2026 as provided in Section 33 of the PLACEC Law 2024. This notice is dated 4th day of September 2025. Signed, Mr. Clarence Daniel Chishak, Chairman,” the PLASIEC boss declared.
Cishak assured that the Commission would conduct free, fair, and credible elections, stressing that the process would be better organized than previous polls.
“We may not be getting it completely rightly, but this will be historic that there will be no gap in the local government administration. So we will follow this religiously to ensure that the process is credible,” he emphasized.
He further called on political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to work with the Commission to achieve peaceful and transparent elections.
“We want to beg and plead with you that you join hands with us. The Commission will continuously engage all critical stakeholders to ensure that this process goes smoothly without any problem,” he added.
