The Plateau State Government has taken decisive action in response to the #EndBadGovernance protests that erupted across the state. The protests, which began peacefully on August 1, highlighted widespread frustration with governance and hunger, but quickly escalated when miscreants infiltrated the demonstrations.
Brigadier General Gakji Shipi (rtd), the Security Adviser to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and Coordinator of Operation Rainbow, a state-owned security outfit, emphasized that the government’s primary concern has been the safety and well-being of its citizens.
The state government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, recognized the legitimacy of the protesters’ grievances but was compelled to intervene when the situation threatened public safety.
General Shipi (rtd) underscored that the government has been proactive in addressing the crisis. “We understand the frustration that led to the protests, and we respect the right of citizens to express their views. However, when the protests were hijacked by individuals with malicious intent, it became necessary for the government to step in to protect lives and property,” he said.
“Despite the unrest, the Plateau State Government has continued to engage with citizens and stakeholders, seeking ways to address the root causes of the protests. The administration has acknowledged the urgent need for improved governance and economic relief, and efforts are underway to tackle these issues”. He added
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has expressed his commitment to listening to the concerns of the people and working towards sustainable solutions. The state government has been actively reviewing policies and initiatives aimed at addressing the economic challenges faced by its citizens, particularly in light of the economic hardships that sparked the protests.
The Plateau State Government’s approach has been one of balancing security with a commitment to democratic principles. While taking necessary measures to maintain order, the administration has also been mindful of the need to respect the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.
