The Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs has successfully repatriated 21 underage girls from Riyom Local Government Area who were intercepted by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command while being trafficked to Lagos for child labor.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hon. Caroline Panglang Dafur.

Her Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Ngo Josephine Piyo, received the girls at her residence in Jos. Accompanying her were officials from Riyom LGA, traditional leaders, the Chairperson of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission, and stakeholders from the girls’ community.

In her address, Deputy Governor Piyo called for stricter penalties against parents who neglect their responsibilities, highlighting the importance of holding agents and accomplices accountable. She reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang prioritizes the welfare of Plateau’s children and will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to secure their future.

“I commend the professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja and the proactiveness of the Plateau State Abuja Liaison Office,” Piyo said. She expressed confidence that the state is making significant progress in combating child trafficking, due to increased awareness, interceptions by the Joint Taskforce, and the vigilance of Plateau citizens who report suspicious movements.

She also acknowledged the efforts of the Riyom LGA chairman, officials, and Plateau’s First Lady in supporting the girls’ repatriation. Piyo noted that the Ministry of Women Affairs, in partnership with the Gender Commission and local authorities, would intensify grassroots awareness and sensitization efforts.

The repatriated girls have been profiled and will undergo counseling and psychosocial support. The state government plans to engage with their parents to understand the root causes of the issue, aiming to find sustainable solutions. The girls are expected to either return to school or acquire vocational skills to secure a better future for themselves and society.
