The Plateau State Government has dismissed as false and misleading social media reports alleging that the Department of State Services (DSS) seized weapons procured for Operation Rainbow, the state’s neighbourhood watch agency.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Arc. Samuel N. Jatau, on Monday, April 22, 2025, the government clarified that the DSS has not, at any point, confiscated weapons or obstructed efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
“We wish to state clearly that this is far from the truth. At no time has the Department of State Services, even in error, stalled or undertaken any action to scuttle government efforts to fighting insecurity in Plateau State,” the statement read.
The press release further condemned the reports circulating on Facebook and other platforms, describing them as “misleading, erroneous and aimed at causing disaffection and acrimony between the government of the state and the Department of State Services.”
Contrary to the false claims, the state government praised the DSS as “a most reliable partner” that has consistently supported efforts to curb insecurity across Plateau.
Citizens have been advised to disregard the reports, which allegedly insinuated that the seizure was a deliberate move to hinder the response of Operation Rainbow to recent violent attacks in some communities.
“The public is therefore advised to ignore those reports… Please note and disseminate accordingly,” the statement concluded.
