The Plateau State Government has declared a state of emergency on the environment and climate change. This is part of a bold step to address the growing climate crisis affecting the state.

Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom, made the announcement while addressing Youth at the Government House, Little Rayfield in Jos.

“Governor Caleb Mutfwang is deeply committed to addressing environmental concerns head-on, noting that climate change poses serious threats to public health, agriculture, and livelihoods across the state,” Gwom said.

He revealed that a state-wide tree planting campaign and grassroots awareness programs will soon kick off. These efforts are aimed at addressing issues like pollution, flooding, deforestation, and poor waste management.

“As part of the government’s proactive response, we are launching a door-to-door waste collection system to improve sanitation and public health across communities,” Gwom stated.

The commissioner also cautioned youths against illegal mining. He noted that such activities have caused environmental damage and increased health risks in some communities.

“The state is working on developing its solid minerals sector responsibly, creating policies that will ensure the protection of people and the environment,” he added.
