The Plateau State Government is taking steps to support women’s rights to own land, houses, and property.

A technical meeting was held in Jos by the Ministry of Lands, Survey, and Town Planning in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council.

The meeting brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders to discuss how to support women’s property rights.

Barr. Peter Nyam Gai, Commissioner for Lands, said current laws that limit women’s rights must be changed. He said, “Laws are made by men and must be amended by men.”

He also said the Ministry has introduced free land title forms for women. He called on banks and donors to adopt policies that favour women.

Mr. Tetmut Audu Gambo, District Head of Kombun, supported the move. He said women manage property better than men.

Religious leaders from Jama’a Nasir Islam and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) also showed their support. They said religion does not stop women from owning property.

The government hopes to achieve full property rights for women by 2030 and believes the support of all stakeholders is key to making this happen.
