Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has requested the intervention of the Federal Government to utilize ecological funds to address the dangerous mining ponds that pose serious threats to communities across the state. The Governor made this appeal during a visit to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Mr Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs disclosed that Governor Mutfwang highlighted Plateau State’s significant contribution to Nigeria’s mineral sector but expressed concern over the severe environmental damage caused by mining activities, which have left hazardous ponds in many communities.
“We are hopeful that through our partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, we can secure Federal Government support to reclaim these dangerous sites. Restoring these ponds is crucial not only for public safety but also for the economic potential of Plateau State,” said the Governor.
He emphasized that reclaiming these areas is essential for maintaining the state’s vital role in Nigeria’s agricultural output and its potential to generate foreign exchange through agriculture.
The Governor also called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and state entities to train Nigerian youths in gem cutting and polishing, a skill that could boost the nation’s GDP. He suggested that the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) should include gem training in their curriculum to equip Nigerians with valuable expertise.
Governor Mutfwang praised Minister Alake for his innovative approach to managing the mineral sector and reaffirmed Plateau State’s commitment to partnering with the Federal Government to create mutually beneficial business opportunities.
In response, Minister Dele Alake acknowledged Plateau State’s historical importance in Nigeria’s mining sector and expressed eagerness to collaborate on development projects that would benefit miners and host communities. “As we advance our mineral development policies, Plateau State remains central to our plans. We are open to partnerships that will transform the sector for the benefit of all stakeholders,” said the Minister.
