Christian and Muslim communities across Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State On August 12, 2024, came together in a unified prayer, seeking divine intervention to end a severe drought that is threatening their crops and livelihoods.

Led by prominent religious figures, including Chief Imam Abdulkareem Salihu and Pastor Isaac Luka, the interfaith prayer sessions highlighted the community’s belief that the drought was a consequence of moral and spiritual shortcomings. The leaders urged residents to reflect on their behavior, suggesting that issues like corruption and violence might be incurring divine displeasure, contributing to the harsh weather.

Beyond spiritual appeals, the community also pushed for practical solutions, calling on the government to assist farmers by introducing more irrigation systems to mitigate the impact of the drought. The religious leaders advocated for a combined approach that integrates prayer with modern agricultural practices to address the ongoing food crisis.

Public reactions to the prayer sessions were mixed. While some residents agreed with the spiritual interpretation of the drought, others pointed to global climate change as the primary cause, emphasizing the need for immediate government intervention and infrastructure development to support farmers.

As the drought continues to affect the region, the community remains hopeful that their prayers, along with practical measures, will bring the necessary relief.
