Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, yesterday visited Bin-Per community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, following an attack that claimed over 26 lives.
Obi, who commiserated with bereaved families and residents, called for decisive action by governments at all levels to halt further killings and protect communities facing persistent security threats.
The former Anambra State governor, accompanied by members of his team, visited the community to sympathise with families who lost loved ones and identify with residents affected by the attack.
Speaking during the visit, Obi urged the people to remain strong and united, saying, “The protection of lives and property must remain a priority for government.”
He said communities ravaged by violence require more than security, stressing that sustained government support was necessary to enable victims rebuild their lives.
“We must not only secure these communities; we must also support the people affected by these attacks to recover and rebuild their lives,” Obi said.
Expressing concern over the security challenges confronting communities in Plateau State, the NDC presidential candidate called for stronger measures to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
Obi also stressed the need for authorities to protect vulnerable communities, saying residents should be able to carry out their daily activities without fear.
“Government has a responsibility to ensure that citizens can live, work and move freely without fear. The people must be protected,” he said.
Some victims who spoke during the visit appreciated Obi for identifying with them and their families at a difficult moment.
The visit afforded the NDC presidential candidate an opportunity to hear firsthand the experiences and concerns of residents affected by the attack.
