Emphasizing the crucial role of youth in nation-building, Comrade Kumwen Walshak, a candidate for Plateau Youth Council (PYC) Chairman, has pledged to offer true and effective leadership that will empower the youth and foster positive change within the council.
Speaking passionately at BGL Hotel in Jos, Comr. Kumwen who is serving as the Public Relations Officer of the PYC asserted that empowering the youth is synonymous with empowering the nation. He confidently rejected the notion of failure, emphasizing that the youth will not be destroyed but rather elevated through effective leadership.
Comr. Kumwen made it clear that his decision to run for chairman was driven by a genuine commitment to solving the challenges faced by Plateau youths. “I am not vying for this position because someone told me to or because of political affiliations,” he stated. “I am doing this because I am convinced that I have the solutions to the problems we face as young people.”
He described his candidacy as a movement aimed at liberating and providing opportunities for Plateau youths, putting both the PYC and the state’s youth on the global map.
Comr. Kumwen assured supporters that he brings not only passion but also the experience and knowledge necessary to lead effectively. “I am not coming to learn the job,” he emphasized. “I have learned the job, I know the issues, and I have the solutions.”
With a vision to set a new standard for the PYC, Comr. Kumwen promised that, if elected, his leadership would become a reference point not just in Plateau State but across the country. He also highlighted the importance of unity among youths, stressing that the time to get it right is now. “Our interest should be the collective interest of Plateau youths,” he said, urging for an end to divisions based on ethnicity or religion.
Furthermore, Comr. Kumwen concluded by reiterating his commitment to defending the interests and integrity of Plateau youths. “Together, we will set a new pace,” he vowed, promising that his tenure would leave a lasting impact and set a high standard for future leaders.
Earlier at the official declaration, Barr. Yohanna Samson Chuwang, the campaign director general, represented by Mr. Kwame Nkwongo, the deputy campaign director, addressed the gathering. He emphasized the significance of youth leadership in shaping the future. “Today we stand at a crossroads,” Nkwongo said. “We can choose to let others make decisions for us, or we can choose to make those decisions ourselves. We are leaders, innovators, change-makers, and trailblazers.”
He highlighted the challenges that young people face, including inequality and injustice, and called for bold, fearless, and inclusive leadership. Nkwongo stressed the importance of selecting a leader who embodies empathy, compassion, integrity, and transparency, noting that the effectiveness of youth leadership rests heavily on the shoulders of the PYC chairperson.
“Together, we can achieve greatness,” Nkwongo concluded, urging everyone to support Kumwen Walshak’s candidacy as a path to inspiring, motivating, and empowering Plateau youths. “We are the change-makers of now. Let us make our mark, let us make a difference, and let us lead the way because we are trailblazers.”
In the goodwill messages, Comrade Habila Izang, Northern Zonal Coordinator of PYC, emphasized that this is a dream for young people striving for change. He praised Kumwen as a kind, straightforward leader, assuring that his leadership would be meaningful and effective. Izang encouraged hard work and firmness in the campaign, expressing confidence that Kumwen would deliver on his promises.
Comrade Alex Audu, Central Zone Coordinator of PYC, described Walshak as a vibrant, straightforward youth who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to youth leadership. He noted that Walshak’s campaign is driven by the desire to make the youth council more youth-friendly and free from external influence. Audu urged delegates to support Walshak, confident in his ability to achieve victory and bring positive change.
Comr. Longpan, The National President of the Mupun Youth Association, highlighted Kumwen’s track record as a PRO and his vibrant leadership within the PYC. Longpan called on delegates and comrades to support Kumwen’s candidacy, emphasizing his ability to deliver on his promises and lead the PYC effectively.
