The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private secondary schools across the state following rising security concerns. The directive, issued on Friday, is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school administrators.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kachollom Pyam Gang, the ministry described the closure as a proactive security measure. She emphasized that the government would not take chances with the lives of children, especially given recent developments in the country’s security landscape.
According to the statement, the decision is intended to forestall any potential threat to students and school staff. The commissioner noted that “prevention, they say, is better than cure,” stressing the importance of taking responsible steps to safeguard human life.
The ministry also directed all secondary schools—both public and privately owned—to make the necessary arrangements for compliance. Schools were instructed to shut down operations immediately in the interest of public safety.
Dr. Gang further stated that the government’s priority is to ensure that no student or teacher is exposed to avoidable danger. She encouraged school authorities, parents, and guardians to remain calm and cooperate fully with the directive.
The commissioner assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and will announce further directives as security conditions improve. She added that reopening dates will be communicated after careful assessment and consultation with relevant security agencies.
Residents across the state have been urged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety as authorities work to restore normalcy. The ministry appealed for understanding, noting that while the decision may disrupt academic activities temporarily, protecting lives remains paramount.
