In response to the death of Chalya Silas, a serving corps member in Kaduna, the House of Representatives has requested the police guarantee that justice be served promptly.
Silas was murdered earlier in October by individuals thought to be phone thieves.
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) special education graduate was fatally stabbed in the Barnawa neighborhood of Kaduna.
She was reportedly jogging when three bike riders stopped to steal her phone.
According to NAN, during its plenary session on Tuesday, the lower chamber unanimously adopted a motion by Beni Lar, the lawmaker representing Plateau.
In her motion, Lar said Silas hailed from Tabat, in Langtang north federal constituency, Plateau state.
I The lawmaker said the NYSC member died at the hands of her assailants while undertaking the mandatory service year.
Lar said prompt justice “would deter potential perpetrators while ensuring a safer environment for Nigerian children”.
“The tragic incident is one of numerous murders of innocent girls and women nationwide, with perpetrators often unaccounted for or not brought to justice,” she said.
“Worried that the safety and security of the girl child is no longer guaranteed, given the continued liberty and freedom enjoyed by these heinous assailants, who still roam the streets preying on their next victim.
“The prompt justice in this case would deter potential perpetrators, thereby ensuring a safer environment for Nigerian children and residents;
“Delaying justice in this case would be equivalent to denying justice to the victims’ families and loved ones, as well as the entire nation.”
She added that if no effort is made to stop the continuous attacks, rape, and murder of young girls and women, it would render the country unsafe to live.
The lawmakers also observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased and tasked the Kaduna state commissioner of police to speedily identify the assailants.
Ruling on the matter, Tajudeen Abbas, the speaker of the house, mandated the committee on police to commence an investigation.
He also ordered the committee on youth development to review the safety of corps members.
The lawmaker also asked the authorities of the NYSC to compensate the family of the deceased.
